The Black Ink Project - Born out of Frustration and Inspiration
Back in 2005, I launched a popular affiliate newsletter called Quit Your Day Job. The purpose of the newsletter was to show people the affiliate techniques and strategies I used to quit my day job.
I was sending the newsletter out weekly, but my readers wanted more. Some people on my list started requesting that I put all this information into a guide or e-book so they could have a one-stop destination for learning.
But before I put all this content into an e-book, I wanted to know if the methods I had used to succeed could be learned and applied by new affiliates. Plus I didn’t want to launch the book without a few testimonials.
So that summer I decided to do an apprenticeship with five new affiliates. During this time we had weekly training calls where I would teach them the ropes, evaluate their affiliate campaigns, help them set goals, and keep them motivated.
The apprenticeship lasted five weeks. At the end of the project 4 out of the 5 students were making a consistent profit. One year later 3 out of the 5 became Commission Junction Performers (earning $10,000/month).
I learned a lot from this little experiment…
First - I had proof that my methods could be learned and put into action by others. This was important to me because there are a lot of people out there who make money online, but can’t teach others how to do it.
Second - I started to understand what skills and characteristics were required for people to succeed.
Armed with this information I proceeded to write my first e-book - High Performance Affiliate Marketing. I took the same material from my apprenticeship and transferred it into this concise 150 page guide. I sold thousands of copies within the first few months.
In addition to the book, I launched a member support forum so that people could get additional help.
Within a few months some trends started to emerge… People who bought the book and were active in the forum were 10x more likely to succeed than those who simply read the book. This is because people asking questions and lending advice were actively doing what they had learned.
One thing I couldn’t understand is that of the 5,000+ people who paid $49.95 for my e-book, only a few hundred became active in the forum… despite the fact that the forum was heralded as one of the primary benefits of the book.
This is the same reason so many diets fail. It’s not that the diet doesn’t work, but people don’t stick to it. They either don’t follow it correctly, or quit when they don’t see instant results. This is why dieting is a multi-billion dollar industry and people are fatter than every before. They keep coming back to buy more hope, but don’t take action.
The same thing can be said about the Business Opportunity industry. It’s now one of the must lucrative categories online. Every "guru" seems to be launching a new product or service to help you make money. They hype up their products with false claims, stand in front of $100,000 cars (they don’t even own), and hire a model to stand in as their trophy wife.
You Can Succeed, But You Need to be Realistic
While it’s possible to make a substantial income as an affiliate, it’s unrealistic to think you can go from $0 to six-figure-success in minutes a day or from buying some automated money-making system.
Don’t get me wrong, some of these products are good, but most aren’t worth the paper they’re printed on. More time is invested in the product launch and sales letter than the training material.
The fact is most of these gurus don’t care if you succeed, as long as you have enough money on your credit card to buy their latest product.
This made me re-think my whole business model. I didn’t want to work with people who weren’t serious about their commitment, or had unrealistic expectations.
I was so disgusted and burned out with the Business Opportunity industry that I contemplated shutting down QuitYourDayJob.com. I didn’t want to be associated with these clowns in any way, shape or form.
But I decided that wouldn’t be fair to those students who were willing to put in the time and effort to learn the business. Plus I couldn’t just shut down my member community - people were still using it.
